We had a great day for Donna & Jay’s engagement photos at the Brooklyn Botanic Garden…

We were there during the cherry blossom festival but most of the blossoms had already dropped due to the unseasonably warm spring. But we still managed to get some petals into a photo…

I still have no idea what these branch structures were, but they made for some fun texture for photos…

Terrence & Amanda｜Longwood Gardens Engagement, Kennett Square, PA

Amanda & Terrence had a gorgeous day for their engagement shoot. OK… I’m calling it an engagement shoot, but officially they’re already married. Neither one had ever been to Longwood Gardens, so I got to play tour guide for a while. The couple has their hands pretty full caring for their young son… oh, yeah and doing research to cure the world of disease. Clearly they make a great team…

Always love it when couples will bust out the dance moves like their the only ones around…

Tracee & Kenny｜Columbia University Engagement, NYC

I first met Tracee when she was a bridesmaid in Amber & Matt’s wedding in 2010, and she contacted me as soon as she got engaged. It’s always such a compliment to receive those calls from friends of former couples! Her fiancé Kenny suggesting doing their engagement session at his alma mater Columbia University, and I knew it would be a great location. This was the second engagement session I photographed on a day when forecasters called for 50 mph winds.

Fortunately Tracee can pull off the windblown look very well!

We stumbled upon this on campus and had to work it into a few photos…

Amanda & Mike｜Brooklake Country Club, Florham Park

Amanda & Mike’s engagement session had been scheduled well in advance of their October wedding so they’d have photographs for their “save the date” cards. I know New Jersey weather can be crazy. But 50mph wind gusts? That’s what forecasters were calling for… along with a wind chill factor to match.

We found this awesome tree on the grounds of the reception site, Brooklake Country Club in Florham Park. It’s been there since the American Revolution…

Found some cool reflections when we popped inside to warm up a bit. Really love this one…

Looking forward to seeing some of these moves on the dance floor…

It’s always hard to pick a favorite, but this would definitely be among the contenders…

Juka & Jonathan｜NYC City Hall wedding

Juka & Jonathan’s wedding was full of firsts. It was my first wedding of 2012, the first City Hall wedding I’ve photographed and my first same-sex wedding. For Juka & Jonathan, who traveled from Northern California, it was their first time ever in New York City.

Before we get to the photos, a little bit about their story…

The couple met on line and after talking on the phone for hours, they arranged their first date. It was scheduled for the day Jonathan was runnning the Bay to Breakers race in San Francisco and he told Juka he’d run extra fast because he was so excited to meet him. Because he had run so hard, Jonathan proceeded to… promptly fall asleep on Juka’s couch… on their first date!

Jonathan managed to stay awake for their second date: a four hour hike and picnic, after which they both knew they wanted to spend the rest of their lives with each other. They moved in together and here’s the killer… three months after meeting the love of their lives Juka & Jonathan had to say goodbye.

Jonathan, who is on active duty with the US Air Force, was deployed to Kurdistan. This was before the end of the military’s “don’t ask, don’t tell” policy, so you can imagine the scene when Jonathan departed. Families and spouses embracing and bidding their loved ones a safe journey, and Juka and Jonathan leaving each other with a awkward “bro hug” and a wave.

OK… the sad part is over! After the DADT policy was repealed, Jonathan couldn’t wait until he returned home, and proposed to Juka… over email, from Kurdistan.

Juka began planning their trip and making arrangements for their wedding ceremony… just the two of them at City Hall in Manhattan. Jonathan returned from his deployment on New Year’s Eve and less than two weeks later the couple was headed east.

We were all mildly amused by ticket number they received…

It was truly an honor to be asked to be the official witness for their ceremony. As jovial and excited as Juka and Jonathan were throughout the day, there was an incredible feeling of quiet passion, sincerity and seriousness as they said the words “I do”. Then it was back to fun…

Kudos to Jonathan who suggested the pose for this one…

And the goofiness continued…

1st date, john fell asleep, ran bay to breakers, wanted to run as fast as he could so they could meet.
2nd date: 4 hour hike and picnic lunch and they both said they knew.
3 mos later, john was deployed to Kurdistan w Air Force.
Had already talked about marriage,
John proposed over email... John didn't return until NYE and today they were in NYC getting married.

1st tim in NYC for either, plan is to return each year for anniversary

Danielle & Dennis｜NYC engagement

Danielle & Dennis are one of those couples that is just fun to be around. They braved the streets of Manhattan on one of the busiest shopping days of the year en route to Central Park for our shoot. When they asked about doing some photos at Rockefeller Center, I have to admit I wasn’t quite sure how we were going to pull it off in the middle of the day… on the first Saturday the tree was up! I’m so glad we did it. See below for the results…

We started off in Central Park…

Some of the best “laugh-on-command” smiles I’ve seen…

We eventually tore ourselves away from the park and headed into the heart of the beast! Danielle & Dennis were a little patch of calm amid the craziness. Love the results…

Morgan & Paul｜Hoboken engagement

Morgan & Paul were up bright and early for their Hoboken engagement photos. They were returning to Virginia after a quick visit to their old stomping grounds, so morning worked best. An 8am shoot is not ideal for night owls, but this future-husband-and-wife are definitely morning people… or they did a great job of faking it!

It usually takes time for people to warm up in front of the camera, but Morgan was ON right from the start…

I couldn’t have asked for a more playful and carefree spirit…

You knew these two had to be Irish, right? Willie McBrides, the place where it all started…

One minute you’re in Hoboken, turn the corner and it’s like you’ve been transported to some European village. Had to visit the little cobblestone street…

It’s always nice to keep up with former clients as their families grow. I’ve now had the pleasure of photographing Shirley & Roger three times: for their wedding, for the birth of their first son Joshua, and now, after the arrival of their twins Jermiah & Josiah. (Well technically below that’s Josiah & Jeremiah.) Enjoy…

Dad, Roger, loves the giant Garfield cat and we always make sure he makes it into at least one picture…

Josiah was still content to sit still, but Jeremiah, right, was already crawling and on the move…

Joshua, now almost 3 years old, is at that stage where he’s curious about everything… questions, questions, questions…
